Where to stay in Gozo without a car – Detailed overview
I would like to point out that it is absolutely possible to get around Malta and Gozo without a car. For Gozo, I even recommend to rely on public transport as it is efficiant and connecting nearly all areas of the island.
Here a detailed overview of 4 different areas to stay in Gozo:
Victoria (Rabat)
During my latest visit to Gozo without a car, I stayed in Victoria: an excellent decision and my top recommendation if you’re exploring Gozo on foot or using public transport.
As the heart of Gozo, Victoria is the island’s cultural, historical, and social hub. Its central location makes it ideal for accessing Gozo’s many attractions.
Whether you’re in Gozo for a short visit or an extended stay, Victoria is perfect for soaking in the island’s unique character while enjoying the convenience of being close to everything.
Citadel Views and Local Life
Victoria’s crown jewel is the Citadel, a historic fortified complex perched on a hill. Walking through its narrow streets of that UNESCO World Heritage Site and admiring panoramic views of the island is an absolute must.
Beyond the Citadel, the town is full of cozy cafés, traditional bakeries, and local shops where you can soak up Gozo’s laid-back vibe. I just loved Victoria as it feels authentic and welcoming.
Vibrant Yet Peaceful
Victoria strikes the perfect balance between being lively and relaxed. Daytime offers plenty of activity with markets, shops, and small museums, while evenings are calm, making it easy to unwind after exploring.
If you’re after a base that gives you a little bit of everything – history, convenience, and a taste of local life – Victoria won’t disappoint.
Public Transport Accessibility
Victoria might be small compared to Valletta and all its sights, but its transport connections and walkable size are its biggest advantages.
The island’s main bus terminal is located here, with routes connecting you to all key spots in Gozo, like Dwejra Bay with the blue hole and inland sea, Ramla Bay (Gozos biggest and most beautiful beach) or of course the port in Mgarr and the ferry connection to Malta.
For car-free travelers, staying in Victoria makes it easy to reach any part of Gozo within minutes. Even on foot, you can explore most of Victoria’s sights and beyond.

4. Mgarr
Mgarr is Gozo’s main harbour town and the only connection to Malta.
Perfect for travelers prioritizing convenience, it offers great access to public transport and stunning coastal views, making it an excellent base for exploring the island or catching early ferry connections.

The harbour area has a range of waterfront restaurants and bars, making it ideal for enjoying a meal or drink while soaking in the picturesque surroundings.
Fresh Seafood and Local Cuisine

How to get around Gozo by public transport
Unlike Malta, where a hire car sometimes seems to be the better option, getting around Gozo without a car is easy and very convenient, thanks to the island’s good public transportation system.
The small island has a good bus network connecting Victoria with all villages, main beaches, and attractions. Malta Public Transport provides regular service across the island.
A one-way bus ticket costs €2.00 per person in winter and €2.50 per person in high season in summer. You can buy a single ticket directly from the bus driver and then travel on the bus for a maximum of 2 hours.
My experience using the buses in Gozo: The difference to bus connections in Malta is that in Gozo public transport is generally very reliable.
During my different stays for several days each, I did not experience any bus that did not show up or was delayed!

My tip: If you are traveling by bus in Malta and Gozo for a week, you should definitely buy the Explore Card. For 7 days of unlimited bus travel, you only pay €25.00 per person for both islands. Since I traveled by bus every day, the Tallinja Explore Card quickly paid itself off. Info: Ferry services are not included.

My experience staying in Gozo without a car
I’ve never explored Gozo with a rental car, and to be honest, unless you have mobility challenges, there’s really no reason not to rely on the island’s efficient public transport.
During my first visit to Gozo, I stayed at the Quaint Boutique Hotel in the charming village of Xewkija, just a few minutes south of Victoria.
The highlight of my stay was the breathtaking view of the majestic Rotunda of Xewkija from my balcony, a truly memorable experience.
My favorite place to stay in Gozo is the Casa Gemelli Boutique Guesthouse in Victoria.
This family-owned gem is just a stone’s throw from the bus terminal, making it incredibly convenient for exploring the island. With a delicious breakfast and thoughtful details in every corner, it’s a truly special and welcoming retreat.
