Tenerife in Winter
5 Reasons why that Canary Island is Your Perfect Escape from the Cold
Looking for reasons to visit Tenerife in winter? There are plenty! In fact, it would be a much shorter article if I wrote about why not to travel to the Canary Islands, especially Tenerife, during the cold European season.
To be fair, Tenerife is a great destination all year round, but it truly shines from November to March. I have enjoyed the winter sun there once and will most certainly return.
As someone who isnโt a fan of winter, Tenerife is definitely one of the warmest places in Europe during this season.
Keep reading for my compelling 5 reasons to visit the island in winter, including information about the weather, where to stay, activities, and more!
5 Reasons Why to visit Tenerife in Winter
There are lots of valid reasons why travelling to Tenerife in winter is a fantastic idea.
1. Mild and Pleasant Climate
The islandโs mild winter climate allows for a variety of outdoor activities without the oppressive heat of summer. You can comfortably explore Tenerifeโs natural beauty, from hiking trails in Anaga Rural Park to relaxing on the beaches.
Even in the cooler months, you can expect pleasant temperatures perfect for sightseeing and outdoor adventures.
2. Fewer Crowds
My favorite reason: Winter in Tenerife means fewer tourists compared to the busy summer months. This translates to less crowded beaches, attractions, and restaurants, making for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.
While you surely wonโt be alone, youโll have more space to explore popular spots like Mount Teide and Playa de las Teresitas (โจ Location) without the hustle and bustle of peak season tourism.
3. Lower Prices
Traveling in winter often means lower prices for flights, accommodations, and even some activities. Many hotels and airlines offer off-season discounts, especially in January and February, allowing you to enjoy Tenerifeโs beauty without breaking the bank.
This makes it an ideal time for budget-conscious travelers or for enjoying a more luxurious vacation than you might afford in high season.
4. Outdoor Activities
Tenerife offers a wide range of outdoor activities and things to do to suit all interests. These can be enjoyed year-round, but winterโs milder temperatures make them less exhausting and less crowded. Here are some must-dos during the winter months:
Hiking
- Anaga Rural Park: Known for its lush, green landscapes and ancient forests, Anaga offers trails like the Path of the Senses, which are perfect for all fitness levels. The cooler temperatures in winter make hiking more comfortable and enjoyable.
- Teide National Park: Explore the unique volcanic landscapes and take on trails such as Roques de Garcia or, for the more adventurous, the Alto de Guajara hike for stunning views of Mount Teide. The winter months provide clear skies, ideal for capturing breathtaking pictures of that unique UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Beaches
- Playa de las Teresitas: This golden sand beach is the perfect place for sunbathing and gentle swims, thanks to its breakwater that keeps the waters calm. Even in winter, the temperatures are pleasant enough to enjoy a beach day.
- Playa de Benijo: A more secluded black sand beach, ideal for a quiet day by the ocean with dramatic views and strong waves, making it a favorite for photography enthusiasts.
Whale and Dolphin Watching
- Boat Tours: Depart from Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje for a chance to see pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins. Make sure to book an eco- and animal-friendly Whale Watching Tour with knowledgeable guides who respect the marine environment.
Winter is an excellent time for whale watching as the sea is often calmer, providing better visibility and more stable conditions.
5. Cultural Festivals
Winter in Tenerife also brings vibrant festivals, adding a cultural flair to your visit:
- Three Kings Parade (January): Experience Spanish traditions with parades featuring the three wise men, floats, and candy throwing in towns across the island. This event is particularly enchanting for families and offers a glimpse into local customs.
- Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival (February/March): One of the worldโs largest and most spectacular carnivals, it includes colorful parades, elaborate costumes, music, dancing, and vibrant street parties.
Being German, I do know some kind of Carnival, but this was totally different. The atmosphere brings the island to life, offering a unique and unforgettable experience. โจ More information on Carnival in Tenerife
Temperatures in Tenerife in Winter
Due to its subtropical climate and closer proximity to Africa than to Spain, Tenerife is a fantastic all-year-round destination. Especially for those, like me, who are not fans of the old European winters, the Canary Islands are an ideal spot to get some warmth and sun.
Winter in Tenerife typically spans from December to February, with temperatures ranging from 20-25 degrees Celsius most days and minimal rainfall.

Practical Tips for Visiting Tenerife in Winter
Packing
Packing appropriately for Tenerife in winter ensures a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Hereโs what you should include to your Tenerife Packing List:
Backpack: A small daypack is handy for carrying essentials while exploring or hiking.
Layered Clothing: The weather can vary, especially when moving from coastal areas to higher altitudes like Mount Teide. Bring a mix of t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, a warm jacket, and a light raincoat. Layering allows you to adjust to different temperatures easily.
Comfortable Footwear: If you plan on hiking, pack sturdy hiking boots. For everyday wear, comfortable walking shoes or sandals are essential.
Swimwear: Despite it being winter, the temperatures are still warm enough for beach days. Donโt forget your swimsuit, beach towel, and flip-flops.
Sun Protection: The sun can be quite strong even in winter. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from UV rays.
Car Rental
While public transport is available, especially as you will be traveling in the off-season when buses run less frequently, renting a car in Tenerife gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace. Here are some tips:
- Booking: Book your car in advance to secure the best rates and availability. I always compare rates to get the best offer and competitive prices on DiscoverCars.
- Insurance: Ensure your rental includes comprehensive insurance to cover potential damages, especially if you plan to drive on mountainous or rural roads.
- GPS or Maps: Although the island is well-signposted, I highly recommend having a GPS or offline maps on your phone.
Accommodation
Choose your accommodation according to your travel plans. Consider staying in the south for more consistent weather and easy access to popular beaches and attractions.
Good to know: Most flights from Europe will fly into Tenerife South Airport and usually only flights coming from mainland Spain fly into Tenerife North Airport. Driving time between the two is 45 minutes (65km).
The north offers a more local experience, with lovely towns like La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz.
I really liked the southwest near Los Gigantes when I stayed last time for a full week in Tenerife. This location was perfect for hikes in Teide National Park and not far from water sports activities like kayaking or surfing.
