The Roques de Garcia trail is a loop within the Teide National Park, that takes you through some of the most iconic landscapes of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands.
The trailhead starts at the La Ruleta Lookout Point, opposite the Parador de Caรฑadas del Teide (โจ Location). There are lots of parking options on both sites of the road.
Highlights of the Hike
Roque Cinchado (Finger of God): One of the most photographed rock formations in the park, this striking monolith stands tall amidst the volcanic terrain. It’s a perfect spot for a photo break.
La Catedral (The Cathedral): A volcanic phonolite chimney, looking like a spectacular pointy rock.
Peak Views: Throughout the hike, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Mount Teide, Spain’s tallest peak. Nearby, often overshadowed, stands Pico Viejo with an impressive elevation of 3155 meters, just shy of the 3712-meter giant that dominates the landscape.
Bizarre Rock Formations: The route passes a variety of unique volcanic formations that have been shaped over millennia. Some even say they resemble faces or animals, adding a touch of mystique to the experience.
Trail Description
The Roques de Garcia Trail, is well-marked as number 3 in the Teide National Park.
Starting from the Mirador de los Roques parking lot, this counter-clockwise loop begins on a flat path that circles the iconic Roques de Garcia formations, including the notable Roque Cinchado, El Torrotito, El Burro and Roques Blancos.
No need to watch the path, it is wide and flat. Just enjoy the magnificent views all around you. There are several viewing platforms along the way where you can take short breaks and soak in the scenery.
As you continue, the trail gradually descends to the Llano de Ucanca plain, a landscape formed by sedimentary rocks. Here you’ll encounter the impressive La Cascada lava flow and smooth pahoehoe lava tongues. This descent offers stunning views of Mount Teide.
After crossing the plain, the trail passes around natural volcanic walls formed by dense lava and begins a gentle climb. One of the highlights of this section is La Catedral, a striking phonolite volcanic chimney.
Don’t forget to also look at the ground while walking, where you will find a variety of plants typical of the Las Caรฑadas area, such as brooms, laburnums, rhododendrons, flixweed and marguerites.
The final section involves a short but steep ascent back to the starting point, which can be challenging but manageable if taken slowly.
Practical Tips
Timing: Early morning or late afternoon hikes are ideal to avoid the midday heat and to catch the best light for photography.
Gear: Wear comfortable sport or hiking shoes and bring water. Sunscreen and a hat for sun protection are a must. There is only little shade along the way. The weather can be variable, therefore I recommend a light jacket.
Navigation: The trail is well-marked with the number 3, but a map or GPS can be handy for peace of mind.
